Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma revealed plans for a feasibility study on introducing a metro rail system along the Guwahati Ring Road, a key urban mobility project outlined in the state Budget for 2026-27. The proposed metro rail corridor aims to enhance urban transportation in Guwahati by running along the Ring Road, facilitating seamless travel.
The state government will kick off the process with a detailed feasibility study to assess the technical, financial, and operational viability of integrating the metro rail system with the Guwahati Ring Road. This initiative is designed to support the Ring Road project, which seeks to ease traffic congestion in Guwahati by redirecting through traffic away from the city center while improving connectivity to various urban and suburban areas.
Once implemented, the metro rail system would mark Assam’s inaugural mass rapid transit network, significantly bolstering public transport in Guwahati amidst the city’s rapid urbanization and escalating vehicular traffic. The Budget, presented by Finance Minister Jayanta Mallabaruah, underscores a strong focus on infrastructure development, urban mobility, and long-term transport planning to sustain Assam’s economic growth and urban expansion.
The feasibility study will evaluate factors such as alignment, project cost, passenger demand, funding mechanisms, and execution strategies before a final decision is made on the metro rail project. This announcement aligns with the government’s broader vision to revamp Guwahati into a modern, sustainable metropolitan center through integrated road and public transport networks.
