A group of unidentified assailants attacked five students at Dr Hari Singh Gour University in Madhya Pradesh’s Sagar district in broad daylight. The incident occurred between 1.20 p.m. and 1.30 p.m. on a busy Monday when the campus was full of students. The injured students, identified as Hari Ayyappan, Bittu Mahto, Narayan Shukla, Shukhram Yadav, and Ankit Shah, were brutally assaulted.
According to an FIR filed at the Civil Lines police station, Hari Ayyappan, a student from Kerala pursuing a BA (Hons) at the university, alleged that two attackers, Kapil Swami and Avinash Gupta, associated with a right-wing group, were involved. Ayyappan mentioned in the FIR that as they were heading to meet the university proctor, a group suddenly attacked them near a tree.
The attackers reportedly verbally abused the students, pushed them down, and beat them with sticks and other objects before fleeing in a car with registration number MP-11 T5553 and a Royal Enfield motorcycle numbered MP-15MV7713. The FIR named Kapil Swami and Avinash Gupta, both residents of Sagar, although no arrests have been made yet. Police are actively working to locate the suspects.
Despite the assault happening on campus and involving hostel students, the university administration has not issued any formal statement. Videos circulating on social media depict the students being attacked and seeking help from university staff. The police investigation is ongoing, with further actions planned based on evidence and witness accounts.
