Australia and India have affirmed their growing strategic and defence alliance, pledging to deepen military collaboration, improve maritime security coordination, and enhance defence industry engagement. The 10th Defence Policy Talks in New Delhi on May 8 saw both nations reviewing the progress of their bilateral defence relations. The discussions, led by officials from both countries, focused on bolstering defence and security coordination in the Indo-Pacific region under the India-Australia Comprehensive Strategic Partnership.
The meeting highlighted the expansion of bilateral defence cooperation, including the upcoming annual India-Australia Defence Ministers’ Dialogue in 2025, signaling increased trust and strategic alignment between Canberra and New Delhi. Emphasis was placed on enhancing interoperability across military domains, stepping up joint exercises, and advancing maritime security cooperation amid rising regional strategic competition.
Progress on commitments made during the 2024 India-Australia Annual Leaders’ Summit was also reviewed, with efforts to renew the Joint Declaration on Defence and Security Cooperation and develop a Joint Maritime Security Collaboration Roadmap being discussed. Plans for the first India-Australia Joint Staff Talks later this year were confirmed, marking a significant move towards broadening institutional defence engagement between the two nations.
The talks also highlighted training and officer exchange programs, such as the Gen Bipin Rawat Memorial Young Officers Exchange Programme and military academy exchanges between the Indian Military Academy and Australia’s Royal Military College, Duntroon. These initiatives were recognized for fostering mutual trust, strengthening people-to-people connections, and enhancing shared strategic understanding. Defence industry cooperation was another key focus area, with recent initiatives like the India-Australia Defence Industry Roundtable and defence trade missions contributing to the deepening partnership.
The ongoing collaboration between India and Australia across defence, trade, and regional security underscores the continuous expansion of their strategic partnership framework, as observed by The Australia Today.
