Australia has revealed its squad for the upcoming T20I series against Pakistan, set to commence on January 31 in Lahore. The 17-player touring group includes Mahli Beardman and Jack Edwards, recognized for their standout performances in the Big Bash League. This series serves as a precursor to the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup scheduled in Sri Lanka and India.
In preparation for the World Cup, Australia will transition from Pakistan to Sri Lanka post the three matches to gear up for their initial World Cup encounter against Ireland in Colombo. Notably, 10 members of the World Cup squad will be part of the Pakistan tour.
Several players like Nathan Ellis, Tim David, Josh Hazlewood, Glenn Maxwell, and Pat Cummins will link up with the World Cup squad in Sri Lanka post their recovery from injuries, with a focus on managing their workload effectively for the upcoming tournament. Cummins, who played a pivotal role in securing the Ashes, has been granted rest since his appearance in Adelaide.
Meanwhile, new additions to the squad include Sean Abbott, Beardman, Ben Dwarshuis, Edwards, Mitch Owen, Josh Phillippe, and Matt Renshaw. Despite Beardman and Edwards being untested at the international level, their inclusion is based on their prior involvement with Australia’s white-ball squads during India’s recent tour.
Chief selector George Bailey expressed optimism about the series, emphasizing the opportunity it presents for players on the cusp of selection and young talents to gain valuable exposure alongside the World Cup group in Pakistan. Cricket Australia confirmed that players currently engaged in the BBL will join the squad in Pakistan upon the conclusion of their tournament commitments.
The T20I series in Lahore, spanning from January 29 to February 1, will precede Australia’s T20 World Cup campaign commencing on February 11. The squad announced for the Pakistan series includes Mitchell Marsh as captain, with a mix of experienced international players and promising talents forming the team.
