Australia’s captain, Alyssa Healy, has announced her retirement from international cricket after a distinguished 16-year career, following the upcoming home series against India. Healy will lead Australia in three ODIs, three T20Is, and a one-off Test match before bidding farewell in front of the home crowd.
Healy’s decision has garnered widespread acclaim from the cricketing community, with Australia’s Prime Minister Anthony Albanese lauding her remarkable contributions to the sport. He expressed confidence in Healy’s potential to excel as a cricket commentator in the future.
Various figures in the cricketing world, including Mitchell Starc, Healy’s partner and Australia’s premier fast bowler, and former Aussie skipper Meg Lanning, have praised Healy’s leadership and skills as a captain. Ellyse Perry, Australia’s leading all-rounder, also acknowledged Healy’s retirement, emphasizing her irreplaceable impact on the team.
Healy, reflecting on her retirement, mentioned mixed emotions but stated that the upcoming India series would mark her final appearances for Australia. Despite her ongoing passion for playing, she feels it is the right time to step away due to a waning competitive drive.
With an impressive record of 489 runs in 10 Tests, 3,563 runs in 123 ODIs, and 3,054 runs in 162 T20Is, Healy has been a stalwart in Australian cricket. Appointed as Australia’s full-time captain in December 2023, she will conclude her career by leading the ODI and Test sides against India at home.
