Australian cricketer Jess Jonassen has decided to step down from her leadership positions with Queensland Fire and Brisbane Heat Women after a five-year tenure as captain in domestic competitions. Jonassen, who will mark her 100th match in the Women’s National Cricket League this week, had been leading both teams since 2020, succeeding Kirby Short. She recently returned to play after recovering from shoulder surgery that cut short her WBBL campaign in December.
Georgia Redmayne took over as the stand-in captain during Jonassen’s absence and will continue to lead Queensland Fire for the rest of the WNCL season. Jonassen cited a period of reflection for her decision, stating that she could no longer fully commit to the leadership role. She expressed gratitude for the opportunity to lead the teams and emphasized her support for the future leaders within the group.
Jonassen thanked the coaching staff, administrators, and her family for their support during her captaincy. She acknowledged the impact of her leadership role and expressed pride in her contribution to Queensland cricket. Meanwhile, Queensland Fire is gearing up for crucial WNCL matches against Victoria Women, with the outcomes potentially determining their place in the final against New South Wales Breakers.
