Though Glenn Maxwell, Marcus Stoinis, and Steve Smith are not part of Australia’s T20I series in Bangladesh, chief selector George Bailey emphasized that they have not been dropped but are still in consideration for future assignments. The trio, along with Pat Cummins and Josh Hazlewood, were absent from the 16-member squad for the upcoming T20I series in Dhaka on June 17, 19, and 21.
Cummins and Hazlewood were rested due to the heavy Test schedule, while Maxwell, Stoinis, and Smith were left out to explore other options following Australia’s disappointing Men’s T20 World Cup performance earlier this year. Bailey mentioned that it’s a crucial period to develop new players and roles within the T20 group.
Maxwell, 37, has faced challenges in recent T20Is, Stoinis has been active in the IPL, and Smith, 37 next month, aims to participate in the 2028 LA Olympics. Aaron Hardie’s return and Joel Davies’ debut in the T20I side have been influenced by their performances, with Bailey highlighting Davies’ talent as a left-arm spinner.
Bailey addressed concerns about Australian players potentially rejecting national contracts due to the appeal of franchise cricket, noting that negotiations at this time of year are common. He emphasized the evolving landscape and the need to balance player options and national commitments.
