Acting sternly against visitors engaging in illegal off-roading in Ladakh’s sensitive areas, authorities have fined four tourists over Rs 2 lakh. This move, seen as a first in Ladakh, was directed by Lt Governor V.K. Saxena to preserve the region’s environment. The tourists were penalized for driving through Pangong Lake and other protected wildlife zones.
The Wildlife Department, following the Governor’s orders, fined vehicle owners from Himachal Pradesh, Chandigarh, Punjab, and Uttar Pradesh Rs 50,000 each. These individuals were found guilty of driving in restricted areas like Pangong Lake and wildlife sanctuaries. The vehicles were seized and released post payment of fines.
Incidents of off-roading were reported at Pangong Lake, Changthang, and Nubra Valley, leading to penalties. Offenders were caught during routine patrols and social media monitoring. One SUV was even driven into Pangong Lake waters for stunts, causing environmental harm.
Authorities also took action against vehicles in Changthang Cold Desert Wildlife Sanctuary and Karakoram Wildlife Sanctuary. Lt Governor Saxena emphasized responsible tourism to protect Ladakh’s biodiversity. Off-road driving near protected areas is a punishable offense under the Wildlife (Protection) Act, and strict measures will be upheld.
Tourism bodies in Ladakh demand Central government assurances to safeguard the region’s heritage and ecology. The focus remains on preserving the delicate ecosystem and biodiversity of Ladakh.
