An auto-rickshaw driver in Lucknow, Uttar Pradesh, was injured in a police encounter after allegedly harassing and assaulting two young women on their way to an examination. The incident occurred when the girls, traveling from Charbagh to Raebareli, were reportedly taken to a secluded area by the driver instead of their intended destination.
Deputy Commissioner of Police (West) Kamlesh Dixit provided details, stating that the driver diverted the route and harassed the students. Following the girls’ alarm, the police registered a case, ensuring the students’ safety and allowing them to proceed to their examination.
Authorities identified the accused as Hasim, a resident of Hardoi with a criminal record, who attempted to flee and fired at the police during the encounter near Munnu Khera Pulia. In the exchange of fire, he sustained a leg injury, leading to his arrest and hospitalization for treatment.
Legal proceedings are underway, with police confirming the suspect’s previous arrest in a 2024 rape case. The investigation into the matter continues as the accused remains in custody.
