Bangladesh’s Awami League has expressed serious concerns about the actions of the ruling Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) government, warning that policies initiated under the former Muhammad Yunus-led interim government pose a threat to the country’s democratic culture. The Awami League criticized the recent ban on the party through a bill in parliament, which originated from an ordinance during the Yunus regime.
The Awami League denounced the BNP for implementing measures they had previously opposed during Yunus’s tenure, calling it a betrayal of the people. The party emphasized that banning a people’s organization like the Awami League goes against democratic political culture and public support. They highlighted the arrest of former Parliament speaker Shirin Sharmin Chaudhury as unjust and criticized the mistreatment she faced.
The Awami League accused the government of using state machinery for extreme oppression, persecution, and arrests of its leaders and activists. They cited instances of unjust arrests and killings of party members, along with the filing of fabricated cases and extortion. The party urged the government to create a conducive political environment and uphold democratic values to prevent further escalation.
