The Badminton World Federation (BWF) has decided to implement a new 3×15-point scoring system starting in January 2027. This change, approved at the BWF’s annual general meeting in Denmark with a 198-43 vote, aims to replace the existing 3×21-point format. The new system will feature best-of-three games to 15 points, with the possibility of extending to 21 points in case of a tie.

The BWF’s move follows over a year of testing at select tournaments as part of efforts to modernize the sport. The federation anticipates that the revised format will lead to shorter, more dynamic matches, enhancing fan engagement and assisting players in managing the physical demands of the game. The governing body believes that shorter games could aid player recovery, reduce fatigue, and potentially prolong athletes’ careers.

The “Alternative Laws of Badminton” by the BWF have already incorporated this new system, having undergone trials at various levels, including national competitions, Grade 3 events, and the World Junior Championships in Guwahati. Despite receiving significant backing, the change has sparked discussions within the badminton community. While some top players like Shi Yuqi and Anders Antonsen have expressed reservations, citing potential advantages for older or weaker players, emerging talents and lower-ranked players see it as an opportunity to compete on a more level playing field and challenge established stars.
