Balendra Shah, the parliamentary party leader of the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), has been named the new Prime Minister of Nepal. President Ram Chandra Poudel appointed Shah to the position following the RSP’s victory in the recent parliamentary elections.
Shah’s appointment as the 47th Prime Minister comes after the RSP elected him as their parliamentary party leader. He is set to take the oath of office at the President’s Office, accompanied by Hindu rituals, including the performance of Shankha Naad by seven conch players.
At just 35 years old, Shah is among the youngest prime ministers in Nepal’s history. His entry into national politics last year led to a significant electoral success for the RSP, with a generational shift evident in the lawmakers elected in the recent polls.
Shah’s landslide victory over former Prime Minister K P Sharma Oli in the elections marked a turning point, securing the highest number of votes by any candidate since 1991. His background in engineering and governance experience as the mayor of Kathmandu Metropolitan City have shaped his approach to public works and urban development.
