Bangladesh’s former Prime Minister and Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) chairperson, Khaleda Zia, was laid to rest with full State honors in Dhaka. Her funeral prayers took place at the South Plaza of Parliament complex, followed by her burial beside her husband, former president Ziaur Rahman at Sher-e-Bangla Nagar. The funeral ceremony was attended by various political leaders, including Bangladesh’s Chief Advisor of the interim government and foreign ministers from different countries.

Thousands of mourners gathered around the National Parliament complex to pay their respects as the funeral prayers were held for Khaleda Zia. Prior to the funeral, BNP Acting Chairman Tarique Rahman urged people to pray for his mother and offered to settle any financial claims against her. Rahman also sought forgiveness on her behalf for any hurt caused by her words or actions. The hearse carrying Khaleda Zia’s body arrived at Manik Mia Avenue from her son’s residence, where family members and party leaders paid their final respects.

Khaleda Zia, a three-time Prime Minister and long-time BNP chairperson, passed away at the age of 80 after battling a prolonged illness. She had been undergoing medical treatment for complications related to her heart and lungs before her demise. Survived by her elder son Tarique Rahman, his wife Zubaida Rahman, and their daughter Zaima Rahman, Khaleda Zia leaves behind a legacy in Bangladeshi politics.
