Bangladesh Test off-spinner Nayeem Hasan has claimed that he was harassed and assaulted by members of a law enforcement agency in Chattogram. The incident reportedly took place after Nayeem returned home from a cricket match. Nayeem, who is part of Bangladesh’s squad for the upcoming Test series against Zimbabwe, expressed his agitation over the events of that night.
According to Nayeem, the altercation occurred when the police stopped his vehicle and demanded documents from the driver. Despite his cooperation, Nayeem alleges that the situation escalated quickly. He stated that the police grabbed him, beat him, and verbally abused him during the encounter.
Nayeem mentioned that despite informing the police about his profession as a national cricketer, they did not initially pay heed. It was only after receiving calls and being informed of his identity that the police changed their behavior towards him. The incident has sparked attention within Bangladesh’s cricket community, especially as Nayeem is set to play in the upcoming Test series.
Deputy Police Commissioner Amirul Islam of Chattogram Metropolitan Police has assured a thorough investigation into the matter. He stated that if any police officers are found guilty, appropriate action will be taken. Amirul emphasized zero tolerance for such behavior within the police force and assured that justice would be served to Nayeem.
