As External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar concluded his brief visit to Dhaka, Bangladesh’s High Commissioner to India, Riaz Hamidullah, highlighted the potential for enhancing Bangladesh-India ties based on shared interests and mutual interdependence. During the visit, Jaishankar met with Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) Acting Chairperson Tarique Rahman, discussing the future direction of the bilateral relationship.
Expressing optimism for stronger ties, Hamidullah emphasized the importance of pragmatism in shaping the relationship between Bangladesh and India. Jaishankar’s visit to Dhaka was primarily to attend the funeral of former Bangladeshi Prime Minister Khaleda Zia, where he extended condolences on behalf of the Indian government to Rahman.
Acknowledging Khaleda Zia’s role in democracy, Jaishankar conveyed confidence in the continued development of the partnership between India and Bangladesh. He handed over a personal letter from Prime Minister Narendra Modi to Rahman, underscoring the shared vision and values that will guide the relationship between the two countries.
