Bangladesh Prime Minister Tarique Rahman marked the country’s National Day by driving his official car displaying the national flag for the first time since taking office. This gesture was made as he headed to pay respects to the Liberation War martyrs at the National Memorial in Savar. Rahman also participated in the Independence and National Day Parade 2026 at the National Parade Ground in Dhaka in the same flag-bearing car, commemorating the 56th Independence and National Day.
Incidentally, Bangladesh National Day signifies the historic moment when the country’s founder, Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, proclaimed the independence of East Pakistan, now known as Bangladesh, on March 26, 1971. This declaration came after the Pakistan Army initiated ‘Operation Searchlight’ targeting Bengali-speaking civilians, students, and military personnel, leading to widespread atrocities. The day symbolizes the struggle for sovereignty and the sacrifices endured during the Bangladesh Liberation War.
The events of that day marked the beginning of a series of events that culminated in the nine-month Liberation War, remembered in Bangladesh as the onset of the 1971 genocide. Amidst Cold War dynamics that complicated international responses, Operation Searchlight sparked armed resistance in East Pakistan, eventually resulting in a full-scale war and Pakistan’s surrender in December 1971. The operation involved coordinated attacks across urban centers using tanks, mortars, and small arms, leading to the detention of Awami League leader Mujibur Rahman.
In a separate development last year, the interim government in Bangladesh under Chief Advisor Muhammad Yunus designated August 5 as “Uprising Day” and August 8 as “New Bangladesh Day.” Additionally, July 16 was declared as Martyr Abu Sayeed Day in memory of a student killed during a mass movement. The political landscape saw a debate over the government’s decision to mark August 8 as “New Bangladesh Day,” with some factions advocating for a shift to August 5. The move was perceived as an effort to alter the significance of the March 26, 1971, independence declaration towards more recent political events.
Reports from Thursday indicate a prioritization of realpolitik and pragmatism over emotional reactions and vengeful intentions that could have harmed the nation in the long run.
