The Bangladesh Students’ League (BSL), affiliated with the ruling Awami League, has called on the international community to ensure that Bangladesh’s upcoming general election on February 12, 2026, is conducted fairly and inclusively under a neutral government. They emphasized that this is crucial for stability and democracy in the country. The BSL expressed concern over what they described as state-sponsored violence and repression.
They criticized the interim government led by Muhammad Yunus, accusing it of creating disorder and anarchy through what they termed as “mobocracy.” The BSL highlighted a surge in violence, including mob attacks, arson, enforced disappearances, and brutal killings, attributing these incidents to orchestrated chaos following political changes in 2024.
The student organization condemned attacks on media outlets, minority groups, and political entities, stating that Bangladesh is no longer under lawful governance but is moving towards chaos and authoritarianism. They particularly denounced the targeting of journalists and the assault on press freedom, citing incidents like the arson attacks on leading newspapers and the brutal killing of a Hindu youth under false allegations.
Additionally, the BSL raised concerns about attacks on Indian diplomatic missions, accusing the regime of endorsing mob violence as a foreign policy tool. They alleged mass arrests of Awami League members and support for extremist groups, leading to a breakdown of the rule of law in the country.
