A Bangladeshi court has ordered the imprisonment of former MP and Awami League leader Sheikh Mujibur Rahman in connection with a murder case related to a shooting incident during the July 2024 protests in Dhaka’s Uttara. The order was issued by Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Zakir Hossain following a petition from the investigating officer, as confirmed by Sub-Inspector Md Shamim of the prosecution division.
Rahman was apprehended from a residence in Sector 11 under Uttara West Police Station and presented before the court by investigating officer Shahin Mahmud, who requested custody for questioning. The case record revealed that an individual named Asadullah was shot in Sector 7 of Uttara on July 19, 2024, during the demonstrations.
The incident led to a general diary being filed by Asadullah’s wife at Turag Police Station. His family identified his body at Dhaka Medical College Hospital’s mortuary on August 11, 2024, and subsequently filed a murder case in connection with the shooting.
The development occurs amidst an increasing crackdown on the Awami League that commenced during the former Muhammad Yunus-led interim government’s eighteen-month tenure and has persisted under the current Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) administration.
