Bangladeshi Prime Minister Tarique Rahman engaged in bilateral discussions with Chinese President Xi Jinping at the Great Hall of the People in Beijing. This meeting was a significant part of Rahman’s official visit to China, focusing on strengthening ties between the two nations. The talks, as reported by local media, began on Friday morning.
According to Prime Minister’s Additional Press Secretary Atikur Rahman Rumon, the discussions are anticipated to cover various bilateral topics such as trade, investment, infrastructure, and connectivity. The Prime Minister’s office spokesperson, Mahdi Amin, mentioned that both leaders are set to delve into areas of mutual interest during their wide-ranging conversation. Bangladeshi media highlighted the expectation that Prime Minister Rahman would address several issues concerning Bangladesh’s interests in the meeting with President Xi Jinping.
The recent talks followed Rahman’s discussions with Chinese Premier Li Qiang the day before. Reports indicated that the two sides conversed about the Teesta project, trade, and investment, and witnessed the signing of 13 Memorandums of Understanding (MoUs). Subsequently, the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) conveyed that the Prime Ministers led a high-level bilateral meeting, culminating in the signing of two agreements and thirteen MoUs. This development signifies a significant advancement in Bangladesh-China cooperation and partnership.
Rahman’s visit to China, following his official trip to Malaysia, aims to solidify economic and defense relations between the two countries. The focal point of the discussions is a fighter jet deal, indicating a potential strategic shift towards Beijing. The visit may raise concerns about commitments under the US trade pact, particularly with the acquisition of Chinese fighter jets and UAV technology. These defense agreements could impact Washington’s Indo-Pacific strategy and draw attention in New Delhi, especially with advanced aircraft near India’s Siliguri Corridor.
