BCCI Secretary Devajit Saikia visited the newly constructed indoor cricket academy at the Sikkim Cricket Ground in Mining, Rangpo. The facility, costing Rs 23 crore, is set to be inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on April 28. It boasts modern amenities like net practice areas, a gymnasium, and a swimming pool to enhance cricket training standards in the region.
Saikia mentioned that Prime Minister Modi’s visit to Sikkim on April 28 will mark the completion and inauguration of the indoor cricket facilities. These facilities, initiated in 2022, will also be inaugurated in five other Northeastern states simultaneously. The move aims to uplift the cricket scene in the entire North-eastern region.
Expressing contentment with the quality of facilities in Rangpo, Saikia praised the Sikkim Cricket Association for its efforts in developing cricket infrastructure. He highlighted the international-standard cricket pitch and outfield, emphasizing the association’s significant contributions to cricket development in the region.
The indoor cricket initiative, launched in 2022 under former Secretary Jay Shah, now ICC Chairman, addresses the region’s prolonged monsoon season. The project, aimed at providing indoor cricket facilities in states with heavy rainfall lasting six to seven months annually, ensures uninterrupted practice for cricketers. Under Jay Shah’s leadership, the BCCI successfully completed this project.
