BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia commended the International Cricket Council (ICC) led by Jay Shah for the significant progress in the sport following the conclusion of the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup 2026. Australia secured their seventh title by defeating England in the final match at Lord’s Cricket Ground in front of a record crowd of over 28,000 spectators.
Saikia highlighted the sold-out attendance at Lord’s as a strong indication of the increasing popularity of the game and the promising future it holds. He expressed his delight at witnessing the growth of women’s cricket on a global scale, emphasizing the success of the final between Australia and England as a testament to the sport’s rising popularity.
Australia’s victory in the tournament was marked by a remarkable performance, as they chased down England’s total of 150/4 to claim victory in the Women’s T20 World Cup final. With Beth Mooney leading the charge with 64 runs off 49 balls, Australia finished at 153/3 in 17.1 overs, securing their return to the top of T20 cricket after a three-year hiatus.
Under Jay Shah’s leadership, the ICC has been credited for driving a significant transformation in women’s cricket, inspiring a new generation of cricket enthusiasts globally. This victory not only marked Australia’s triumph but also ended their streak of World Cup misfortunes on UK soil dating back to 1993.
