Within a day of Bengal Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari’s warning, police have called Naoda MLA and Aam Janata Unnayan Party (AJUP) chief, Humayun Kabir, for questioning regarding two cases filed against him for contentious statements. Police visited Kabir’s residence on Tuesday, serving notices for his appearance in two separate cases. Kabir has been instructed to appear at Rejinagar and Shaktipur police stations on July 3 and 5, respectively.
Humayun Kabir, however, stated that he was not present at home when the notice was issued, expressing unawareness of it. He mentioned that he would decide on appearing once he receives the notice in hand. Speaking to the media, Kabir asserted, “I am not at home, but there are people there. I will decide upon receiving the notice. I will not be subservient to anyone.”
Following Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari’s caution, three organizers of Humayun Kabir’s ‘controversial’ meeting were apprehended within 24 hours. The arrested individuals, Golam Mustafa, Mohammad Aminuk Haque, and Anisur Rahman, were detained by Murshidabad district police in separate operations on Monday night. Kabir had recently conducted meetings in Rejinagar and Shaktipur areas, where his remarks led to allegations and the filing of two FIRs.
Chief Minister Adhikari, in his Assembly speech, warned of police ‘action’ in response to Kabir’s comments. He assured that those responsible for inviting Kabir would be dealt with first. Adhikari emphasized the government’s commitment to upholding the rule of law and urged Kabir to exercise restraint. Subsequently, police arrested Golam and Aminul in a case initiated by Rejinagar police station, while Anisur was apprehended by Shaktipur police station.
According to the police, Aminul resides in Loknathpur village of Rejinagar, while Golam, the ‘main initiator’ of the event, is from Kashipur. Golam, who sought police permission for the party meeting, allegedly made provocative statements during the gathering. Humayun Kabir defended his stance, stating that his remarks were not against the Chief Minister but aimed at addressing the unrest caused by new BJP members in the region.
