Kolkata, Aug 3 (IANS) Three people were injured in a firing incident in Birbhum district’s Nalhati area, police said on Monday. Out of the three injured, the condition of two is critical.
According to police, the incident took place on Sunday night near Haridaspur village under Nalhati Police Station. Three residents, Biki Sheikh, Habibul Sheikh and Johnny Sheikh, were rescued after being injured in the firing. They were admitted to Rampurhat Government Medical College in Birbhum.
Later, Biki and Johnny were shifted to a hospital in Durgapur of West Burdwan district as their condition was serious.
Locals said the three were chatting on a bamboo platform on the roadside near Haridaspur village when a few people arrived on three bikes. Their faces were covered with cloth.
Without provocation, they fired indiscriminately and fled. Hearing the gunfire, villagers rushed out and took the injured to hospital. Police were soon informed.
Officers from Nalhati Police Station recovered 10 shell casings and one cartridge from the scene on Monday. An investigation has been launched to identify the culprits and ascertain the motive. The incident has created panic among residents.
Locals alleged that anti-social activities have been going on for a long time, especially during the previous Trinamool Congress government era.
A senior officer of Birbhum district police said bike-borne miscreants fired several rounds targeting a few people.
“Three people sustained bullet injuries and were rushed to hospital. Two of them have been shifted to Durgapur as their condition is critical. A case has been registered against unidentified miscreants. Investigation is on,” he said.
