The Hebbagodi Police in Bengaluru have filed a First Information Report (FIR) against an unknown individual for creating a fake Facebook account in the name of M. Narayana, Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP), Electronic City Division. The impostor used this account to deceive the officer’s acquaintances and the public into giving money.
DCP Narayana lodged a complaint after discovering that someone had impersonated him on social media and fraudulently solicited financial aid from people who knew him. The accused has already managed to swindle money from the DCP’s contacts and the public by posing as the officer.
The Hebbagodi Police have taken legal action against the unidentified perpetrator under specific sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), 2023, and the Information Technology Act, 2000. These sections address offenses related to cheating, identity theft, and impersonation for fraudulent gains using computer resources.
The accused utilized the fake Facebook profile to assume the DCP’s identity and interact with individuals, persuading them to provide money under false pretenses. Investigators suspect that the fraudster leveraged the officer’s reputation to dupe victims into transferring funds.
The FIR reveals that the culprit operated under the alias “Om Singh” on the fake profile to communicate with potential victims. Details of the bank account, mobile numbers, and UPI ID allegedly used by the perpetrator to receive money have been included in the complaint. Authorities are scrutinizing these financial particulars to track the money flow and identify the mastermind behind the scam.
Law enforcement is scrutinizing the digital footprint, encompassing social media engagements and transaction histories, to gauge the extent of the fraud and ascertain if more individuals have been ensnared by the scheme. The Hebbagodi Police are conducting a thorough probe to apprehend the suspect and have cautioned the public to be vigilant when responding to money requests on social platforms, even if purportedly from government or police officials.
DCP M. Narayana has issued a warning on Facebook regarding the fraudulent account created in his name. He emphasized that miscreants are deceiving the public by collecting money under the guise of selling discounted household items, clarifying that he has not endorsed any such sales or shared personal contact details. The public has been advised to verify information through official channels before engaging in financial transactions.
