Bidhannagar Municipal Corporation Mayor Krishna Chakraborty stepped down from her position on Thursday, citing personal reasons. This move comes after Kolkata Mayor Firhad Hakim’s resignation, resulting in the Trinamool Congress losing control of both civic bodies in the city. The Bidhannagar Municipal Corporation is situated in the Salt Lake area of Kolkata.
Krishna Chakraborty submitted her resignation letter to the Commissioner of Bidhannagar Municipal Corporation on Thursday afternoon. She also sent a copy of the letter to the state’s Municipal and Urban Development Minister Agnimitra Paul and the department’s Secretary. With about eight months remaining in her term, Krishna had served as the Mayor of Bidhannagar for two consecutive terms, from 2019 to 2022 and then from 2022 until June 4, 2026.
While leaving her office, Krishna mentioned resigning due to personal reasons and expressed her inability to work as desired. She highlighted the lack of board meetings, absentee councillors, and busy officers as challenges. Despite stepping down as Mayor, Krishna stated her intention to continue serving as a councillor, a role she has held for 16 years. She thanked the residents of Bidhannagar for their support and affection, showing emotion as she referred to Mamata Banerjee as a mother figure.
Bidhannagar BJP MLA and state minister Sharadwat Mukherjee criticized Krishna Chakraborty for her resignation, alleging undisclosed property holdings in Bidhannagar. Krishna, known for her close association with Trinamool Congress leader Mamata Banerjee, has a history of political involvement dating back to her time with the Youth Congress. Her resignation follows a series of similar moves by Trinamool public representatives across the state post the party’s defeat in the Assembly elections.
