Amid a controversy over linking the Deputy Chief Minister’s house to the Chief Minister’s residence, the Bihar Building Construction Department has retracted its previous notification. The government residence at 5 Deshratna Marg, designated for the Deputy Chief Minister, had been temporarily attached to the Chief Minister’s official residence at 1 Anne Marg due to renovation work at the latter.
The department clarified that this arrangement was made to facilitate official use during the renovation of the Chief Minister’s residence. With the completion of the renovation work at 1 Anne Marg, the temporary connection between the two residences is no longer necessary. Consequently, the initial notification has been revoked, and 5 Deshratna Marg has been reinstated as a separate government residence.
Before assuming the role of Chief Minister, Samrat Chaudhary resided at 5 Deshratna Marg as the Deputy Chief Minister. Following his appointment as Chief Minister, he moved to the bungalow at 1 Anne Marg in Patna. Additionally, the Samrat Chaudhary government renamed the Chief Minister’s official residence-cum-office as “Lok Sewak Awas,” with an official notification issued on May 5, 2026.
The recent decision by the Bihar government has sparked a political reaction. Ejaz Ahmed, the state spokesperson of the Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD), criticized the government’s actions, citing a previous statement to the Patna High Court in 2019 regarding the allocation of 5 Deshratna Marg for the Deputy Chief Minister. Ahmed alleged that the government’s latest actions were aimed at avoiding embarrassment and aligning with its earlier court position.
