The BJP accused Trinamool Congress workers of engaging in ‘open hooliganism’ after an Election Commission of India (ECI) observer’s vehicle was reportedly attacked in Mograhat, West Bengal. The incident took place during a field inspection by Special Roll Observer C. Murugan, who was overseeing the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls in the region. Following the attack on the observer’s vehicle, the ECI has requested a detailed report from Murugan.
Reacting to the incident, BJP spokesperson Shehzad Poonawalla criticized the Trinamool Congress for allegedly threatening violence to protect certain groups. He emphasized the breakdown of law and order in West Bengal, expressing concerns over the safety of specific demographics in the state. BJP leaders highlighted the incident as part of a broader trend of undermining democratic institutions in the region.
BJP leaders condemned the attack, with Narendra Kumar Kashyap pointing out the weakening of democracy under the current government. The leaders called for accountability and stressed the importance of upholding democratic values in West Bengal. Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi criticized the state government for allegedly supporting forces that undermine government institutions, while BJP MP Yogender Chandoliya highlighted the unique challenges faced by electoral observers in West Bengal.
Congress Maharashtra Chief Spokesperson Atul Londhe Patil raised questions about the electoral revision process itself, suggesting potential biases. While condemning violence, Patil called for transparency and public trust in the electoral process. These issues have sparked a debate among political parties and the Election Commission.
