In a surprising turn of events in Maharashtra, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM) have come together in local municipal bodies, causing a stir in the political arena. This unexpected partnership, particularly in Achalpur and Akot, has led to discussions about ideological compromises.
The Achalpur Municipal Council in Amravati district now sees the BJP and AIMIM collaborating strategically to secure significant positions, despite their differing political stances at the state and national levels. Notably, an AIMIM member has been appointed as the Chairman of the Education and Sports Committee as part of this arrangement.
The alliance, with the BJP as the primary player, also includes three AIMIM councillors, two NCP (Ajit Pawar faction) councillors, and three Independent councillors. This move mirrors a similar controversial collaboration in the Akot municipality under the “Akot Vikas Manch,” where AIMIM councillors were integrated into the local BJP leadership.
The trend has expanded to the Hivarkhed Municipal Council, witnessing a rare tripartite synergy. In a notable incident, a BJP candidate for the Deputy Chairperson’s position was proposed by a Congress member and seconded by an AIMIM member. These local partnerships have faced criticism from the BJP’s state leadership, with Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis expressing strong disapproval and labeling them as “acts of indiscipline” that damage the party’s reputation.
