The Karnataka BJP and Congress government engaged in a war of words regarding the garbage disposal problem in Bengaluru. BJP state president B.Y. Vijayendra dismissed Deputy Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar’s warnings as “hollow threats,” emphasizing that the BJP would not be intimidated. Vijayendra stressed that garbage management falls under the state government’s jurisdiction and urged Shivakumar to focus on addressing the city’s civic challenges.
Vijayendra criticized the government for not prioritizing basic civic issues like potholes and waste management, instead of making comparisons with global cities. He highlighted that elected representatives have the right to voice concerns about their constituencies and called for practical solutions to Bengaluru’s civic problems. BJP MLA Dheeraj Muniraju also objected to Shivakumar’s comments, expressing concerns over environmental and public health risks associated with waste dumping in his constituency.
Muniraju challenged the government’s dumping practices, warning against potential water and air pollution due to excessive waste disposal. He opposed the idea of burdening Bengaluru Rural district with the city’s waste and vowed to continue resisting such actions in the interest of his constituents. The political clash intensified as Shivakumar accused BJP MLAs of obstructing waste disposal and threatened to enforce the Essential Services Maintenance Act to ensure uninterrupted civic services.
