The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has revealed its candidates for the upcoming by-elections in two Assembly constituencies in Tripura and Nagaland. The nominations for these elections commenced on March 16 and will be accepted until March 23. The scrutiny of nominations is scheduled for March 24, with the final date for withdrawal of candidatures set for March 26. The election results are expected to be announced on May 4.
According to a press release by BJP General Secretary Arun Singh, Jahar Chakraborti will be contesting from the Dharmanagar Assembly constituency in North Tripura district, while Daochier I. Imchen will be entering the electoral fray from the Koridang Assembly constituency in Mokokchung district of Nagaland. The BJP’s Central Election Committee, chaired by party President Nitin Nabin, finalized candidates for by-elections in four states, including Tripura and Nagaland, during a meeting in New Delhi attended by top party leaders.
Jahar Chakraborti, aged 59 and the BJP’s North Tripura district Vice President, will be running for the Dharmanagar Assembly seat for the second time. His opponent will be the CPI (M)-led Left Front candidate Amitabha Datta. The by-election in Dharmanagar was necessitated by the passing of Biswa Bandhu Sen, the former Speaker of the Tripura Assembly, leading to Chakraborti’s candidacy.
In Nagaland, Daochier I. Imchen is set to contest from the Koridang Assembly constituency, a seat previously held by his father, the late Imkong L. Imchen, a prominent Naga leader. The by-election in Koridang was triggered by the demise of Imkong L. Imchen, who represented the constituency for over 25 years. A total of 22,390 voters, including 11,013 women, are eligible to cast their votes in the Koridang Assembly by-election.
