A bandh called by the BJP in response to the murder of Karni Sena youth Himanshu Singh led to a significant impact in Jamshedpur and nearby areas on Friday. Major markets closed, public transport services were disrupted, and most private educational institutions opted for a holiday as a precautionary measure.
The district administration enforced prohibitory orders under Section 163 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS) in six police station areas and heightened security measures. Shops in key business hubs like Sakchi, Bistupur, Jugsalai, Mango, and Golmuri remained shut, affecting business activities and leading to a near standstill.
During the bandh, BJP leaders such as MP Bidyut Baran Mahato, MLA Purnima Sahu, and MLA Saryu Roy, along with party workers, took to the streets, urging for a peaceful protest. Transport services were severely impacted, with buses and auto-rickshaws mostly suspended in the city, causing difficulties for commuters.
The shutdown also affected the industrial belt of Adityapur and Gamharia, where bandh supporters halted company buses, disrupting employee commutes. However, essential services like ambulance facilities and pharmacies were operational. The administration imposed restrictions in various police station areas to ensure law and order, deploying magistrates and additional police personnel in sensitive spots.
The bandh was organized to denounce the killing of Himanshu Singh, a Karni Sena youth who was attacked outside a pub in Bistupur on June 27 and later succumbed to his injuries. Allegations suggest that despite police presence, the assailants assaulted Singh with sharp weapons. Subsequently, the Jharkhand government took action by removing senior police officials and suspending personnel involved, while the pub where the incident occurred was sealed.
Police have made arrests in connection with the case and are conducting raids in Jharkhand, Bihar, and Odisha to locate other suspects who are currently absconding.
