The Tamil Nadu unit of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) criticized the ruling Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) government for permitting protests in support of Iran despite a nationwide security alert. The BJP alleged that the DMK government allowed its alliance partners to organize demonstrations in Chennai on March 1 condemning US-Israel strikes on Iran. These protests even attempted to march towards the United States Consulate in the city.
The BJP spokesperson accused the DMK government of allowing the protests while Prime Minister Narendra Modi was visiting Tamil Nadu and after a security alert was issued by the Union Ministry of Home Affairs. The BJP leader emphasized that such actions risked disturbing communal harmony and public peace in the State. He criticized VCK leader Thol. Thirumavalavan and Communist parties for their alleged selective outrage on international issues.
The BJP called on Union Home Minister Amit Shah to ensure strict enforcement of law and order in Tamil Nadu. The party expressed concerns that permitting such rallies could lead to tension and insecurity among citizens. The ruling DMK and its allies have not officially responded to the BJP’s criticisms, but have previously defended the right to peaceful demonstrations as part of political expression.
