The BJP government aims to transform Kolkata’s renowned College Street into an international-standard destination, shared State Municipal Affairs Minister Agnimitra Paul. The area will be revamped into a pollution-free zone, similar to London’s Oxford Street, ensuring no traffic congestion or noise pollution. Bookstores in College Street will also undergo redesigning with a fresh theme.
State Municipal Affairs and Urban Development Minister Agnimitra Paul unveiled this ambitious project at the Asansol District Library in West Burdwan district, emphasizing the need to steer the younger generation away from excessive reliance on mobile devices towards embracing books. Paul highlighted that Kolkata and Asansol’s industrial region will both benefit from such initiatives in the future.
The initiative aims to combat the digital age’s overdependence on mobile screens by rekindling interest in books, stated Minister Agnimitra Paul. She stressed the importance of libraries and physical books in a time dominated by digital distractions, emphasizing the goal of creating a modern and appealing environment to draw people back to reading.
As part of the proposed plan, a dedicated section of College Street will be off-limits to regular vehicles, with provisions for nearby bicycle stands offering eco-friendly bicycles for hire. Additionally, battery-operated vehicles will be provided for elderly visitors’ convenience. Minister Paul also expressed interest in introducing a specially designed tram service to preserve Kolkata’s heritage.
The makeover of College Street will include redesigned footpaths and roads inspired by London’s Oxford Street, with bookstores adopting a unified style and theme. Vintage-style lamp posts, benches, and free Wi-Fi facilities will be added to create a serene environment for visitors, especially young readers, to enjoy reading or music.
Taking inspiration from the proposed College Street model, plans are underway to establish an international-standard reading space in Asansol, shared Minister Agnimitra Paul.
