Jammu, Aug 17 (IANS) The BJP on Monday carried out a protest march here against the National Conference (NC)-led government, accusing it of backtracking on its electoral promises.

BJP supporters, led by the President of the party’s Jammu and Kashmir unit, Sat Sharma accused the NC government of failing to deliver on governance and development, thereby reneging on its electoral promises to the people.

The BJP on Monday mounted a massive street protest against the NC from Dogra Chowk, Maheshpura and Panjtirthi towards the Civil Secretariat.

BJP MP, Jugal Kishore Sharma and Leader of Opposition Sunil Sharma also joined the demonstration, with protesters raising slogans against the NC-Congress alliance and burning effigies of the government.

The BJP accused the Chief Minister Omar Abdullah-led dispensation of administrative inertia, alleged corruption and failure to tackle unemployment, inadequate civic amenities, erratic power supply and drinking-water problems.

Senior BJP leaders demanded accountability from the government and called for Chief Minister Omar Abdullah’s resignation, alleging that the administration had failed to live up to the expectations of the electorate.

Sat Sharma alleged that the government was attempting to divert public attention from its failures by repeatedly invoking the issue of restoration of statehood for J&K.

He warned that the BJP would intensify its agitation at district, town and grassroots levels if the alleged failures remained unaddressed.

The protest witnessed heavy deployment of police and paramilitary personnel around the march routes and the Civil Secretariat as the BJP stepped up its confrontation with the ruling dispensation.

The BJP has been ramping up its opposition against the NC government while Chief Minister Abdullah has been accusing the Centre of reneging on its promise of statehood restoration to J&K.

In his speech at the Bakshi Stadium in Srinagar, where he unfurled the National Flag and took salute at the Independence Day parade on August 15, Chief Minister Omar Abdullah said the decision of J&K to join the Indian union was right, but whatever was done in August 2019 was wrong, thereby criticising the Centre for abrogation of Article 370 and bifurcation of J&K state into two Union Territories.
