The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has started the process to elect a new Chief Minister in Manipur, where President’s Rule has been in effect since February 13 last year after the former Chief Minister N. Biren Singh resigned amid ethnic violence. Tarun Chugh, BJP’s National General Secretary, has been appointed as the Central Observer for the election of the Legislative Party Leader in Manipur by the BJP Parliamentary Board. The date for the Legislative Party meeting has not been disclosed yet by the BJP.
Senior BJP leaders are expected to meet with MLAs from Manipur in New Delhi to discuss key state issues. Many MLAs from the BJP and its supporting parties have already arrived in New Delhi for the meeting. Former Chief Minister Biren Singh and Manipur BJP President Adhikarimayum Sharda Devi are among those accompanying the party MLAs.
Before departing for New Delhi, Sharda Devi mentioned that all NDA MLAs have been summoned by the Central BJP leadership to address various state-related matters. Former Chief Minister Biren Singh expressed optimism about a positive outcome from the meeting since all NDA allies’ MLAs have been invited. The President’s Rule in Manipur, imposed by the Union government on February 13 last year, is set to conclude on February 12 this year.
