A day after Karnataka Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar expressed willingness to discuss the Mekedatu reservoir project with Tamil Nadu Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay, BJP leader R. Ashoka criticized the Congress for conflicting stances on the issue. Ashoka accused the Congress of prioritizing political interests over Karnataka’s welfare, highlighting the party’s support for the project in Karnataka while aligning with anti-project forces in Tamil Nadu.
Ashoka’s statement followed Shivakumar’s call for both states to prioritize people’s interests over politics regarding the Mekedatu project. He accused the Congress of displaying double standards by backing the project in Karnataka while supporting opposing forces in Tamil Nadu. Ashoka emphasized that Karnataka often suffers due to the Congress’s political compulsions, pointing out the party’s conflicting positions in the two states.
The BJP leader criticized the ruling alliance in Tamil Nadu for opposing the Mekedatu project, alleging that the Tamil Nadu Congress unit has sided with those against Karnataka’s interests. He questioned the authenticity of the Congress’s efforts, such as the Mekedatu Padayatra, accusing them of using such activities for political gains rather than genuinely advocating for Karnataka’s rights. Ashoka raised concerns about the Congress’s commitment to Karnataka’s interests amid opposition from its Tamil Nadu allies.
Ashoka underscored the significance of the Mekedatu project beyond mere development, emphasizing its implications for farmers, water security, and future progress in the state. He highlighted the project’s importance for drinking water supply and power generation in Karnataka, contrasting it with Tamil Nadu’s reservations over water sharing in the Cauvery basin. Ashoka warned that the people of Karnataka are closely monitoring the situation and will assess political parties based on their dedication to safeguarding the state’s concerns.
