In a significant move, the BJP-led council of the Thiruvananthapuram Municipal Corporation has introduced its first Budget, emphasizing a departure from the past towards infrastructure, welfare, and governance reforms. This shift comes after the BJP’s victory in the 101-member council, marking its first control of the Corporation. With 50 seats won independently and the support of an Independent councilor, the BJP now holds a clear majority to govern.
Deputy Mayor G.S. Ashanath, while presenting the Budget, highlighted a change in priorities, aiming to enhance living standards and address urban challenges sustainably. The Budget includes a Corporation-funded housing scheme for the homeless, allocating Rs 20 crore for the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana. Additionally, initiatives like the Atal Canteen for subsidised meals and a healthcare allocation of Rs 1.5 crore reflect a focus on citizen welfare.
The proposals also target urban sanitation and infrastructure improvements, with plans to install 200 modern public toilets under the Swachh Bharat model. Allocation of funds for sewer network expansion, model roads development, and measures for stray dog management further outline the Corporation’s agenda. Moreover, the Budget earmarks resources for tourism development, including a spiritual tourism circuit and preparations for hosting global sporting events.
Mayor V.V. Rajesh envisions Thiruvananthapuram as India’s premier city by 2030 and the world’s leading municipal corporation by 2035, leveraging Central schemes for accelerated development. The Budget speech underscored the importance of citizen-centric governance, emphasizing the need to prioritize public welfare over accolades.
