Referring to comments made by Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leader Atishi in the Delhi Assembly, New Delhi BJP MP Bansuri Swaraj emphasized that the Assembly Speaker Vijender Gupta holds the exclusive right to investigate such statements. Swaraj expressed concern over the Punjab Police being used to probe a matter outside its jurisdiction in defense of Atishi’s remarks about Sikh Gurus during a recent Assembly session. She accused AAP of habitually misusing governmental resources to stifle dissent and criticized their lack of accountability.
BJP MP Swaraj highlighted Atishi’s alleged disrespectful remarks towards Sikh Gurus during a discussion on Guru Tegh Bahadur’s birth anniversary on January 6. Swaraj pointed out Atishi’s absence following the incident, questioning her accountability to her constituents and her party’s response to the controversy. Swaraj underscored that the Delhi Assembly Speaker has the legal mandate to scrutinize any member’s statements, and a forensic examination confirmed the video in question was unaltered.
Swaraj further criticized the involvement of Punjab Police in a matter concerning the Delhi Assembly, citing the registration of an FIR against Minister Kapil Mishra for a tweet related to the incident. She clarified that the case was solely against social media platforms, not individuals, and urged Atishi to issue a prompt apology in light of the forensic report’s findings. Swaraj called for accountability and respect towards religious sentiments in public discourse, emphasizing the need for responsible behavior from elected representatives.
