The newly elected national president of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), Nitin Nabin, is set to visit West Bengal for the first time since assuming office. His two-day visit will focus on the West Burdwan district. Nabin is scheduled to arrive at Andal Airport near Asansol in West Burdwan district on Tuesday around 4 p.m.
In West Burdwan, he will participate in a ‘Kamal Mela’ event at Chitralaya Maidan in Durgapur and meet with the state BJP core committee members. The visit will conclude on Wednesday with various programs in the Durgapur-Asansol region. Notably, the absence of Kolkata in Nabin’s itinerary has sparked questions among political observers.
Some speculate that the strategic choice of West Burdwan, particularly Durgapur and Asansol, is due to the significant non-Bengali, Hindi-speaking population in these industrial and coal belt areas. This demographic has traditionally supported the BJP, making it a crucial constituency for the party. Observers believe that the BJP’s attention to this region is vital for its performance in the upcoming Assembly elections in West Bengal.
In the 2019 Lok Sabha elections, the BJP secured victories in most seats in this belt, but this success did not carry over to subsequent elections. To regain momentum, the party is now intensifying its efforts in this area. The focus on West Burdwan district underscores the BJP’s strategy to consolidate its voter base and strengthen its position in the state.
