The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is gearing up for a tough battle against West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee in the upcoming Assembly elections in her constituency of Bhabanipur. Suvendu Adhikari, the Leader of Opposition in the West Bengal Assembly and a senior BJP leader, has established a ‘war room’ in the Bhabanipur constituency, located at 8/1B Chakraberia Road (South) in Ward No-70 of the Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC) area. The Bhabanipur Assembly constituency comprises eight wards of KMC – 63, 70, 71, 72, 73, 74, 77, and 82.
Based on the BJP’s consistent decent performance in six wards of the Bhabanipur Assembly constituency since the 2014 Lok Sabha elections, with significant leads in wards 63, 70, 71, 72, and 74, Opposition leader Suvendu Adhikari aims to defeat Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee in the upcoming state Assembly elections. Despite Mamata Banerjee contesting from Nandigram in the 2021 state Assembly elections and later winning the Bhabanipur Assembly by-election, the BJP anticipates her participation in the upcoming elections from Bhabanipur. Consequently, the BJP leadership has directed Suvendu Adhikari to prepare for a challenging contest against Mamata Banerjee.
In a strategic move, the BJP plans to execute its campaign against Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee from its war room office in ward number-70, where the party holds the highest number of votes. Notably, the Trinamool Congress has historically secured victory in the Bhabanipur seat primarily based on the votes from ward number-77, which has a significant minority population. The BJP’s strategy includes leveraging the deletion of names from the voters’ list in Bhabanipur, particularly targeting ward number-77, to diminish the Trinamool Congress’ electoral advantage and strengthen its position in the upcoming state Assembly polls.
