India captain Shubman Gill has emphasized the need for a significant improvement in the team’s fitness standards, expressing concern over players’ inability to sustain through even a three-match series. He highlighted the importance of minimizing injuries to enhance the team’s competitiveness for the upcoming 2027 ODI World Cup.
The Indian team faced a series of setbacks due to fitness issues, with key players like Jasprit Bumrah and Washington Sundar sidelined due to injuries. The absence of players like Harshit Rana and Nitish Kumar Reddy further depleted the squad, impacting the team’s performance in recent matches.
Gill pointed out that frequent injuries disrupt the team’s consistency, forcing changes in the playing combinations. He stressed the necessity of maintaining fitness levels, especially with the demanding schedule ahead, including eleven consecutive matches leading up to the World Cup.
Addressing the team’s strategy, Gill explained the decision to opt for a single spinner in Axar Patel due to the pitch conditions in Birmingham and Cardiff, which were not conducive for spin bowling. He highlighted the importance of adapting tactics based on the playing conditions to maximize performance.
Reflecting on the series, Gill acknowledged India’s decent performance but emphasized the need for smarter decision-making and improved adaptability to different conditions to secure better results in future matches.
