The BJP has unveiled its initial list of candidates for the upcoming 2026 Puducherry Legislative Assembly elections, showcasing an early effort to strengthen its position in the Union Territory before the polls. The party’s Central Election Committee, led by Nitin Nabin, finalized the decision during a meeting on March 18, attended by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, and Home Minister Amit Shah, among other senior members.
In this first list, the BJP has named candidates for nine constituencies, including notable figures like A. Namassivayam for Mannadipet, E. Theeppaianthan for Oussudu (SC), and P.M.L. Kalyanasundaram for Kalapet. The lineup also features candidates such as V.P. Ramalingame, A. Johnkumar, Embalam R. Selvam, G.N.S. Rajasekaran, TKSM Meenatchisundaram, and A. Dineshan for various constituencies.
The party’s strategic move of early candidate declaration aims to kickstart a structured campaign in Puducherry, potentially in collaboration with local allies. Further candidate lists for the remaining constituencies are anticipated to be disclosed as negotiations progress, reflecting the BJP’s focus on a balanced mix of experienced individuals and regional representation to bolster its electoral chances.
The proactive release of candidates is designed to provide ample time for the nominees to garner support and establish grassroots campaigns in preparation for the upcoming elections, which are expected to witness a competitive landscape with multiple parties gearing up for the political showdown.
