The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) unveiled its initial list of candidates for the upcoming Assam Assembly elections, naming contenders for 88 constituencies in the state. This list was finalized during a meeting of the party’s Central Election Committee, led by top party officials. Notable figures in the lineup include Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, who will run from Jalukbari, a stronghold for the BJP.
Senior Minister Chandramohan Patowary will compete from Tihu, while state Finance Minister Ajanta Neog will seek re-election from Golaghat. The BJP has also put forward candidates for key urban areas like Dispur, New Guwahati, and Guwahati Central, emphasizing its commitment to maintaining its influence in these regions.
Pradyut Bordoloi, who recently switched from the Congress party to the BJP, will run from Dispur. In addition, the party has named candidates for significant seats in Upper Assam, including Dibrugarh, Tinsukia, Digboi, Doom Dooma, and Margherita. The BJP’s candidate lineup includes Bhaskar Sharma for Margherita, Prasanta Phukan for Dibrugarh, and Suren Phukan for Digboi.
The party has also revealed contenders for various constituencies in Central and Lower Assam, such as Rangia, Nalbari, Barhampur, Samaguri, and Nagaon. Jitu Goswami will represent Barhampur, and Rupak Sarmah will contest from Nagaon-Batadraba. In tribal and reserved constituencies, the BJP has nominated candidates for seats like Boko-Chaygaon (ST), Tamulpur (ST), Dhemaji (ST), Majuli (ST), Bokajan (ST), and Diphu (ST), showcasing its ongoing efforts to engage with indigenous communities.
This initial candidate list demonstrates a blend of seasoned politicians and fresh faces, as the BJP aims to strengthen its electoral support across different areas. Further candidate announcements are anticipated in the near future as the party finalizes its approach for the crucial Assembly elections.
