The recent election results brought surprises as incumbent governments in Bengal, Tamil Nadu, and Kerala were ousted, while Assam’s BJP secured a resounding victory. The BJP, along with allies BPF and AGP, clinched 102 out of 126 Assembly seats in Assam, maintaining a strong hold. In contrast, Congress and its ally Raijor Dal managed only 21 seats.
Political analysts noted the polarized and identity-centric nature of these elections, with Congress losing ground and being labeled a ‘pro-Muslim party’. Congress’s performance was limited to regions with a significant Muslim population, having just one Hindu MLA among its 19 legislators. The BJP’s campaign, emphasizing cultural identity and concerns over ‘Miya Muslims’, resonated with voters.
The Assam BJP’s effective social media strategy played a crucial role in shaping public opinion against Congress. By portraying Congress as a ‘minority party’ and linking its leaders with Pakistan, the BJP garnered support. The narrative of Congress being a ‘Miya party’ gained traction, further fueled by targeted social media campaigns and allegations of minority appeasement.
The Chief Minister highlighted the alleged use of Bangladeshi Muslim Facebook accounts in Congress’s digital campaign, reinforcing the BJP’s stance. Videos from Pakistan praising Congress leaders circulated online, contributing to the perception of Congress as a party favoring minorities. These tactics, coupled with the BJP’s promise of safeguarding Assam from demographic changes, solidified its victory.
