A controversy has arisen in Kerala regarding an alleged misuse of artificial intelligence to create a deepfake video targeting Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The Kerala BJP has demanded legal action and a thorough investigation into the individuals responsible for circulating the video. The complaint alleges that the video, which manipulated original visuals from the G7 summit, was shared on social media platforms by a Facebook account under the name Kaippadi Ansari.
The complaint further claims that AI technology was utilized to produce a fake video depicting world leaders in a manner deemed insulting to the Prime Minister, with offensive remarks included before widespread dissemination online. The BJP emphasized that such deepfake campaigns go beyond political criticism, constituting the intentional creation of false content to mislead the public and undermine trust in institutions. Party representatives stressed the need to prevent artificial intelligence from being weaponized to spread misinformation and attack constitutional positions.
In response, the BJP has urged for legal action under relevant laws and the immediate removal of the video from social media platforms. The party has provided the police with copies of the alleged video and other digital evidence, emphasizing the importance of identifying those responsible and ensuring stringent punishment to deter similar incidents in the future. The complaint reflects broader concerns about the increasing use of AI-generated content, particularly deepfakes, to manipulate public opinion and propagate false information.
The Kerala BJP has pledged full cooperation with the investigation and called for swift action by authorities to address the misuse of technology effectively.
