BJP leader and Union Minister Piyush Goyal has initiated discussions with the AIADMK regarding seat-sharing for the upcoming 2026 Tamil Nadu Assembly elections. This move marks a significant step in strengthening the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) in the state as the election approaches. Goyal, appointed as the BJP’s election in-charge for Tamil Nadu, is actively engaging in dialogue with potential allies to assess the party’s readiness.
The political environment in Tamil Nadu is becoming more intense as various parties are actively involved in alliance-building, campaign strategies, public engagements, and manifesto planning. Goyal’s visit to Chennai signifies the BJP’s commitment to expanding its presence in the state and forming strategic partnerships with regional parties. During his visit, Goyal conducted a thorough review meeting with senior BJP leaders to discuss organizational strategies and assess the party’s electoral prospects in different regions.
Following the internal consultations, Goyal met with AIADMK’s general secretary and former Chief Minister Edappadi Palaniswami for high-level discussions on strengthening the alliance and negotiating seat-sharing arrangements for the upcoming elections. The meeting, attended by several senior AIADMK leaders, including former ministers, highlights the importance both parties place on these talks. Efforts are also underway to explore the possibility of broader alliance consolidation by bringing back former NDA members and uniting smaller parties under a single umbrella.
The BJP is reportedly looking to secure between 30 and 40 Assembly seats in the initial phase of negotiations, with a potential demand for up to 50 seats when including smaller allies. However, final decisions on seat-sharing will be determined through further rounds of discussions between the BJP and AIADMK leadership. The formal commencement of talks is expected to shape the alliance landscape in Tamil Nadu as parties gear up for a competitive electoral battle in the coming months.
