At least six police personnel lost their lives, and one was injured in a blast near a police vehicle in the Bettani tribal area of Lakki Marwat district in Pakistan’s Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province. The explosion occurred close to a police mobile, resulting in the casualties. Additional police forces were dispatched to the scene to secure the area and provide further assistance.
Following the Taliban’s rise in Kabul, Pakistan has experienced a surge in cross-border terrorist activities, particularly in the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Balochistan provinces bordering Afghanistan. In response to these incidents, Pakistan initiated Operation ‘Ghazab lil-Haq,’ claiming to have eliminated 641 Afghan Taliban fighters through strikes along the border and in Afghanistan.
On March 8, in the Killi Ismail area of Quetta, a senior officer of the Counter Terrorism Department (CTD) was fatally shot by unidentified assailants. Inspector Metha Khan, a recent addition to the CTD, was attacked by armed individuals while passing through the area. The perpetrators fled the scene after the shooting, prompting a search operation by law enforcement to apprehend them.
A report by an Islamabad-based think tank highlighted a 30% increase in combat-related deaths in Pakistan in February, attributed to a rise in suicide attacks nationwide. The Pakistan Institute for Conflict and Security Studies (PICSS) documented 470 deaths and 333 injuries during the month, including civilians, security forces personnel, and militants. The report indicated significant rises in fatalities across these groups compared to the previous month.
In February, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa witnessed 53 security forces personnel and six civilians losing their lives in various incidents, including three suicide bombings that claimed 17 lives. Additionally, a suicide bombing in Islamabad resulted in 34 fatalities and 165 injuries, while a separate incident in Punjab’s Bhakkar district led to the deaths of two police officers and injuries to four others. The data revealed that the first two months of 2026 saw a total of 831 combat-related deaths in Pakistan, involving militants, civilians, and security forces personnel.
