The body of one of the four children who drowned in the Yamuna River near the Alipur area of New Delhi has been recovered, bringing the total number of bodies found to three. The incident occurred when four boys went missing due to strong currents in the river near Thokar No. 24 in Hiranki village. Two bodies were found on the same day of the incident.
“Four minors had drowned in the Yamuna River in the Alipur police station area. One child’s body has been recovered, while search operations for the other one are underway,” said East Delhi Boat Club In-charge Harish. A joint rescue operation involving various agencies like the Delhi Fire Service and the National Disaster Response Force was launched immediately after the incident.
Following hours of search efforts, two bodies were recovered from the river before the search operation was temporarily suspended due to poor visibility and darkness. Local authorities have sealed off the area and cautioned residents against entering the dangerous waters of the Yamuna due to high water levels and strong currents.
In a separate incident on the same day, two boys aged 8 and 10 drowned in a water-filled pit in Mukhmelpur village. The children were playing in agricultural fields when they accidentally fell into the pit, which had been dug to collect excess rainwater. Despite being rushed to the hospital, both boys were declared dead on arrival.
Authorities revealed that the pit was excavated for drainage purposes and to store excess rainwater temporarily. Investigators suspect that the site may not have been properly secured, posing a hazard to children in the area.
