The Punjab and Haryana Civil Secretariat, a high-security facility in Chandigarh, was evacuated following a bomb threat received via email at the National Informatics Centre (NIC). Security forces including the CISF, Chandigarh Police, bomb squads, and the Fire Brigade were deployed to search the premises. The Secretariat accommodates offices of the Chief Ministers of both states and other top government officials.
The threat, sent under the name ‘Michael Gill’, prompted the complete evacuation and thorough search of the Secretariat. The CISF has been stationed at the Secretariat since 1995, after the tragic bomb blast that claimed the life of then Punjab Chief Minister Beant Singh. Recently, several schools in Chandigarh also received similar bomb threat emails, causing alarm and swift police response.
Amidst the chaos, the bomb detection team, operations cell, and local police swiftly responded to the threat at the schools. The threatening emails contained alarming content, including references to a potential bomb blast and controversial statements about Chandigarh and the Prime Minister’s upcoming visit to Punjab. Schools were closed for the day, and parents were advised to take their children home, restoring calm to the situation.
