The Bonalu festival, representing Telangana’s culture, is scheduled to take place from July 16 to August 13. The Telangana government is preparing extensively for the festivities in Hyderabad, starting at Sri Jagadamba Mahankali Temple in Golconda Fort on July 16. Minister Konda Surekha, currently in London, conducted a Zoom meeting with officials to oversee the arrangements, emphasizing the significance of the festival in showcasing Telangana’s essence.
Endowments Minister Surekha, along with other ministers and officials, directed departments to collaborate for a successful Ashada Jatara Bonalu celebration in various districts. The festival, known for its grandeur, will span across Greater Hyderabad, Cyberabad, and Malkajgiri Corporations this year. Minister Surekha stressed the importance of coordination among departments to ensure devotees’ needs are met without any shortcomings.
Robust measures are being put in place to cater to devotees and uphold the festival’s cultural and traditional significance. Minister Surekha acknowledged the increased state government funding of Rs 20 crore for this year’s Bonalu festivities, emphasizing the need for effective utilization in enhancing temple infrastructure and providing essential amenities for devotees. Special traffic plans, additional transport services, medical teams, and security arrangements are being implemented to manage the heavy crowds expected at the temples.
The Bonalu festival, observed in three phases in Hyderabad and surrounding districts, involves offerings made by devotees, particularly women, to the Goddess in decorated pots. The festival’s origins date back over 150 years, believed to have started to appease Goddess Mahakali during a cholera outbreak. The festival concludes at various temples, including Sri Simhavahini Mahankali temple and Sri Akkanna Madanna Mahankali temple, where devotees express their devotion through offerings.
